Syllabus

At long last, the new grading syllabus is available. After polling the dojo instructors, everyone wanted the syllabus available on the website, so here you are. The book comes in two formats; booklet and binder.

Booklet
It is best if you take this to a place that does colour photocopying. Staples and most copy places can do this job. Just take the pdf file to them on a disk or USB drive.
The pdf file is formatted to print out on both sides of an 8 1/2 x 11 page. Then it is cut in half, compiled and bound. We are recommending that you have the text printed on fairly heavy paper (60 lb or more) and the cover on a glossy cover stock of 100 lbs.. Spiral binding is recommended. Both red and white look good.

I have dropped the imposed file because it just seems to confuse most printers.

Binder
This size is for those who prefer to put their pages in a binder or for instructors who like to put the pages up on the wall for quick reference during training. You can either punch the pages for a 3 ring binder or put the pages in clear page protectors that already have holes. We tried laminating the pages but they tend to curl. Also, if you use the page protectors, you can reuse them when the syllabus is updated.

Instructor Certification Program

This program is designed to ensure that all ShotoCanada instructors develop proper teaching techniques and that we are all teaching to the same standard. The first step in certification is to have a seminar with our senior instructors. This is a weekend event aimed at brown and black belts who are, or will be, teaching in the dojo. It covers everything from the history of Shotokan through warm ups and class preparation.

The second part of the program requires in-dojo study under the guidance of the dojo sensei. In this part, the aspiring teacher will plan lessons and deliver them to the satisfaction of the head dojo instructor. These tasks are marked and the comment sheet submitted to Sensei Holmes for final approval. Here are the homework and in-dojo requirements.

When all the tasks are completed, you will receive either an assistant instructor or instructor's certificate. This validates your abilities in much the same way a belt indicates your level of karate prowess.
